Angry Fermanagh hurling boss Joe Baldwin has vowed to appeal the two red cards dished out to two of his players in the Erne County’s 0-19 to 1-09 win over Leitrim in the first round of the Lory Meagher Cup in Carrick-On-Shannon on Saturday.

Fermanagh finished up with 13 men after Danny Teague and Dylan Bannon were given straight red cards.

Fermanagh lost their impressive full forward Danny Teague for an alleged off-the-ball incident midway through the first half.

Referee Michael Connolly lined Teague after a lengthy consultation with one of his linesmen.

And Bannon saw red towards the end of a scrappy affair in blustery conditions.

Leitrim’s Michael O’Brien was also lined in an unrelated incident but Baldwin once again slammed the “officiating” at the game and confirmed that the Erne County would be appealing both red cards.

When asked about the incident involving Teague, Baldwin said he had spoken with the player and there was definitely no striking action but that Fermanagh would be studying the video closely.

And Baldwin lashed out at the officiating for the second time in a fortnight.

“I don’t want to appear negative, and I suppose I have to be careful about what I say but the bottom line is that the standard of officiating is just not acceptable.

“It is not acceptable, and I am not happy with this game or the Warwickshire game where a man can run 15 yards and hit Ryan Bogue from behind and get a yellow card just beggars belief.

“I asked the referee and he said he did not see the incident but did not get any response when I asked the referee if the linesman had seen the incident.

“We will be appealing both red cards and in that game today three red cards were issued and I think 12 yellow cards and there was not a dirty stroke in that game.

“Dylan’s incident was that he was striking the ball and the Leitrim guy went down and it is something we are concerned about and we will be appealing both incidents.

“I found those decisions very strange."

On a more positive note, Baldwin said the plaudits for the match should be on the players and not on the referee and he praised the contribution of his bench.

“JP McGarry came on and made a huge impact and hit two fine points and Danann McKeogh showed the real necessary hunger.

“Brian Teehan, Luca McCusker, Ryan Bogue and Sean Corrigan and they all really were very good.

“Leitrim brought it back to four points through a lucky goal and I was not really worried as I felt there was a real bounce back and we have a big challenge next week against Cavan.”

He added: “Cavan have brought in players from outside the county, so we know it is going to be a real battle in Brewster Park and you won’t get anything less.

“This win is a good boost and it is a very tight group and you can’t afford to lose any games in this group.

“Sean Keating, Liam O’Brien and Brian Fitzgerald are their key men and both counties are looking forward to a real battle.”
