The 19th Northern Ireland Milk Cup got
underway on Monday with the traditional
parade through Coleraine to the
Showgrounds where over 3,000 people
awaited the 52 teams from 19 countries in
the most cosmopolitan youth tournament in
the world. All five continents are represented
in this year’s competition with Tiger Star
from China, the Solomon Islands, Palestino
from Chile and Napoli from Italy among
some of the more colourful teams taking
part.
Former Newcastle, Liverpool and England star Peter Beardsley was the guest
of honour and he officially opened the tournament emphasising the need for
the players to, above all else, enjoy the matches.
The two Fermanagh teams proudly walked into the Coleraine Showgrounds
shoulder to shoulder with some of the best young football talent in the world
and when the football action got underway the Fermanagh teams have, thus
far, performed excellently. Indeed, this has been one of the best Milk Cups for
several years for Fermanagh teams with the U14 team beating County Antrim
yesterday, Wednesday, to qualify for the semi finals of the Northern Bank
Trophy and in so doing become the top ranked Northern Ireland County team
in the tournament. Fermanagh will now play Premiership side Middlesboro
today (Thursday) at 3.30pm at Roe Mill, Limavady on pitch number one. A
large support is expected to travel from Fermanagh to the game.
Yesterday afternoon the U16 team took on the might of Galatasary from
Turkey in the quarter finals but could not match the performance of the
previous night (when they held Grasshoppers of Zurich to a 1-1 draw) as they
lost 3-0 to the Turkish full-timers. The U16s will now play at Anderson Park,
Coleraine today with a 12 o’clock kick off although their opponents had not
been finalised on going to press.
The quality and standard of the football in the Milk Cup is matched only by the
camaraderie and atmosphere that the games and their aftermath generate.
This year, by all accounts, is no exception.
