  • Thrilling draw for U16’s
    1. FOOTBALL: Milk Cup 2001 - Fermanagh U16 1; Grasshoppers Zurich 1 - The Fermanagh U16 team produced an outstanding performance at Castlerock on Tuesday night when they earned a well deserved draw against Grasshoppers in a match that had a little bit of everything in front of a 300 strong Fermanagh support. Fermanaghís Michael Kerr scored a goal to befit any game with a swerving 35 yard shot from wide on the left, Christopher Breen turned in a man of the match performance making numerous top class saves and for the second game running, Donal O’Reilly was a rock at the back. It was, however, a fine team performance with the tactical switch of moving Phillip Keenan to the right wing and pushing Donal McNulty up front on his own working well as the Fermanagh U16 team turned in a much better display than the previous night against Blackburn Rovers. The only blemishes were Grasshopper’s equaliser six minutes from time and the dismissal of James McKenna for a second yellow card after being provoked by his opposite number.

  • U14’s push Crewe to the limit
    1. Football: Milk Cup 2001 - Fermanagh U14 1; Crewe Alexandra 2 - The Fermanagh U14 team in the Northern Ireland Milk Cup turned in a second impressive display when they lost out to Crewe Alexandra in rather controversial circumstances in the midday sun at Rugby Avenue on Tuesday. A throw in and corner were awarded to the English club, both of which the Fermanagh team thought should have gone their way. They did not and Crewe scored from the two separate incidents, as they won a close encounter. To dwell on these incidents would, however, take away from a sterling performance by the Fermanagh boys during which they more than held their own and the general consensus was that a draw would have been a more than fair result.

  • U14’s top County team
    1. FOOTBALL: Milk Cup 2001 - Fermanagh U14 2 Antrim U14 2 (Fermanagh won 4-3 on penalties) - After drawing with Tiger Star and losing narrowly to Crewe Alexander, the Fermanagh under U14 team deservedly qualified for the quarter finals of the Northern Bank Trophy on Wednesday afternoon where they were drawn against County Antrim, the only other County side to make it into this group. This was no mean achievement for the young Fermanagh lads and fairly reflected their excellent performances thus far.

  • Raymond Dunlop wins by closest of margins
    1. CYCLING: Last week it was David Dunlop who had the glory in the Irish Underage Championship and then followed this up later in the week when he was told that he was selected for the Irish Under 16 squad for the International Youth Tour in Kerry.

  • Jenning’s championship hopes still alive after Swansea rally
    1. RALLYING: Gary Jennings and Martin McGarrity continued their bid to win the Peugeot Super 106 Cup at the weekend with a solid points scoring finish at the Swansea Bay Festival Rally. Fresh from his stunning victory in the previous round, where the pair defied their lack of rallying experience to defeat their much more experienced counterparts, Gary travelled to the Welsh forests in a positive frame of mind. While another victory would have made the Kesh man favourite for the title, Gary was well aware that a safe points scoring finish was important for his title aspirations, and going at ten tenths from the off could well have proved disastrous.

  • Late, late show by St. Pat’s
    1. GAA: Harp Lager Fermanagh Championship 2001 - St Pat’s 1-11 St Joseph’s 1-09 - Some would say that the Fermanagh Senior Championship lacked a little cut and thrust during the round robin series of matches but that certainly was not the case in Brewster Park, Enniskillen where St Pat’s and St Joseph’s fought out a thrilling encounter as the game finished in rapidly fading light as over ten minutes of injury time was played.

  • Fintona Pro-Am hugely successful
    1. GOLF: The extremely successful Pro-Am played at Fintona last Saturday brought back memories of the eighties when thirty teams vied against each other in the Pro-Am sponsored by local solicitor Andrew Montague and Irvinestown car dealer Claude Maguire. The day was overseen by the PGA but a lot of work had gone into the domestic planning of it. It was a dream come through for Captain John Kelly and all of his hardworking assistants when the day was such a success. When I spoke to John earlier he recounted the Pro-Ams which had taken place in the eighties and on reflection said that for a Club a Pro-Am was not for a day but would implant memories that would last for a lifetime – really a day to remember.
