Fermanagh District Council is to lease a site
at Enniskillen’s Broadmeadow to the
Fermanagh Trust for a building
development. This decision by the Council is subject to planning approval being obtained
for the development and subject to the approval of the Department of the
Environment.
The portion of land had been assessed by the District Valuer at £150,000. At a
recent meeting of the Council’s Policy and Resources Committee, Mrs.
Joanna McVey, Chair of the Fermanagh Trust, Mrs. Kathleen Richey, Mr.
Lawrence Magee, Mr. Lauri McCusker and Mr. Jason Donaghy, also
representing the Trust, met with councillors to explain their proposals.
The Trust sought a long lease for the land from the Council, at a nominal rent.
The Chief Executive advised the committee that any disposal of land by the
Council should be at the best price or the best rent obtainable, otherwise the
approval of the Department would be required. In considering an application
for approval to dispose of property to any one particular body, or to any
particular body at less than best price, the Department would require the
Council to declare the land surplus to requirements, obtain a valuation of the
property concerned and present a strong business case why disposal should
be other than at the best price obtainable.
The committee agreed that the site at the Broadmeadow, Enniskillen should
be leased to the Fermanagh Trust at nominal rent, subject to planning
approval being obtained for the development and subject to the approval of
the Department of the Environment. 10 councillors voted for the proposal, one
against and there were two abstentions. Councillor Raymond Ferguson asked
to be recorded as dissenting.
