FOOTBALL: Impartial Reporter Mulhern Cup
quarter-final: Irvinestown Wanderers 3;
Enniskillen Swifts 1 - Irvinestown Wanderers
won what was a poor game in which neither
side showed the form needed to lift the
Impartial Reporter sponsored Mulhern Cup
at a windy and wet Bawnacre on Saturday
afternoon. The game saw very little football played on the ground with the ball in the air
most of the time as Wanderers looked the sharper of the two teams but you
can also understand why they are facing second division football next season.
On the day, Enniskillen Swifts lacked discipline on and off the field and on the
day if they had concentrated on the football they could well have gotten a
result.
Enniskillen Swifts had the better of the opening play without causing keeper
Nigel Seaney any headaches and it was in Wanderers very first attack that
they scored when a move down the right saw Barry Monaghan play the ball
into the penalty area for Darren McHugh. He jinked to his right and fired a shot
from 16 yards through a crowded area across keeper Christopher McCabe to
the net for 1-0.
Swifts were on level terms within three minutes when a break from defence
saw them open up the Wanderers defence with Paul Crane slipping the ball
through for Keys to score from the corner of the penalty area low past Seaney
into the bottom corner for 1-1.
Swifts had another good spell without looking like scoring and Irvinestown hit
back when Collie Elliott’s pass from the middle found McHugh who ran into
the area to shoot only for McCabe to spread himself well and save. McCabe
again saved Swifts as McHugh beat the offside and the keeper made a brave
save but there wasn’t anything he could do about Wanderers second goal as
Monagahan fired a shot from 16 yards across him into the net for 2-1.
Ellliott then went past a defender on the right of the area and following Boyle’s
challenge, Elliott went down with referee Stephen Johns playing on among
appeals for a foul.
Shane Goan was having a good game for Irvinestown in midfield and he went
close to scoring but fired a 20 yard shot on the turn just over the bar.
In what was the best move of a scrappy game, McHugh played the ball down
the right flank for Goan who left the Swifts defence in his wake as he ran clear
to the bye line and whipped in a low cross which the incoming Wanderers
players could not get a touch to for what surely would have meant a certain
goal.
Elliott then made a good run and cross for McHugh to fire in a shot which
McCabe saved while at the other Keys created an opportunity on the break
with Rory Brazil failing to get a touch as Crane fired his shot wide.
Swifts, early in the second half, had a good effort from the impressive Mark
Miller as he hit a shot which took a deflection and Wanderers’ keeper Seaney
had to dive full length and in mid air to push the ball away for a corner and
what was an excellent save.
Wanderers then had an effort from Elliott saved by McCabe after good work by
Goan and then Elliott had another shot from 14 yards pushed away by
McCabe only for McHugh to play ball back in for Elliott but he fluffed the shot
wide of the post.
Both sides had further attempts at goal with Crane for Swifts and Elliott for
Wanderers going close and mid way through the half the game was ended as
a contest when Goodwin did well on the right to slip the ball inside to Elliott
who showed great skill and strength as he turn two defenders inside the area
and from 12 yards fired a shot to net for 3-1.
The game filtered out without much goal mouth incidents as Swifts still have a
lot to do to breach the gap between mid table second division and even the
lower reaches of the first division. Irvinestown Wanderers face a fight to stay in
the top flight but Saturday’s type of display won’t keep them there.
