Mrs. Edith Elizabeth Stronge
Mrs. Edith Elizabeth Stronge (née Moore), a much loved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Tuesday, 6th August, 2002, at the Erne Hospital, Enniskillen, where she had received such excellent care and attention during her final illness.

Edith was born in Lisnagole, Lisnaskea, on 14th April, 1917, the youngest of five children to parents William and Margaret Moore and was the last surviving member of that family.

She was educated at Maguiresbridge Presbyterian School and afterwards commenced her apprenticeship in the drapery business with S. D. Kells, Lisnaskea. She subsequently moved to work for Dixon and Co. in Coleraine, where she met her husband-to-be Victor Stronge, a native of Pettigo, Co. Donegal. The couple were married in Maguiresbridge Presbyterian Church on 25th August, 1942.

Their first daughter, Ethne, was born in Coleraine before the family returned to live in Fermanagh in 1945, and their second daughter Sandra was born while they were living in Elliott Place, Enniskillen.

In 1952 the family moved to Attybaron, Lisnaskea, and it was here that Edith was to spend the final 50 years of her life. Throughout her married life, Edith was totally devoted to her home and to her family. She was an energetic gardener and an accomplished needlewoman, pursuing both of these interests with great enthusiasm until she became ill some ten weeks before her death.

Edith was a loyal parishioner of Holy Trinity Church, Lisnaskea, where she was regularly involved in parish activities, including being a founding member of the local branch of the Mothers’ Union.

Her funeral service on 8th August at the family church was conducted by the Rev. Stephen Crowther, who had attended her so faithfully in hospital during her illness. The church choir, of which Victor is a long serving member led the very large congregation in singing some of Edith’s favourite hymns: “How sweet the name of Jesus sounds”, “O love that wilt not let me go” (sung at her wedding in 1942) and “Guide me O thou great Jehovah”.

Two of her granddaughters, Sarah Connor and Emma McMullen, read lessons from the Bible which Edith had given to Victor on the occasion of their engagement in 1941.

Edith is survived by her husband Victor, to whom she would have been married 60 years within three weeks of her death; daughter Ethne and son-in-law Shaun (Rosses Point, Co. Sligo); daughter Sandra and son-in-law David (Lisnaskea), granddaughters, Gail, Kerry, Sarah, Lauren, Emma and Lucy; grandsons, Jonathan, Simon and James, great-granddaughters Kaitlin, Aisling and Ciara and great grandson Alexander.

The funeral arrangements were by F. Dowler Ltd.,
