Golf: The Killyhevlin Open was
played over Enniskillen Golf course
at Castlecoole on Bank Holiday
Monday and the beautiful weather
attracted many golfers from the local
area and from further afield.
Enniskillen Golf Club is rapidly
becoming a Mecca for visiting golfers
who find the course to be one of the
premier inland tracks to be found. The fast greens and manicured fairways invited the best from all
who played and the only excuse for poor scoring lay in the hands
of the golfer. No excuses were required from a legion of players
who took on the tight pin positions and posted scores I can only
dream about.
It came as no surprise to see local man Sean Maxwell top the
leader board as Sean has featured prominently in a number of
events this season. The 19 handicapper was in stunning form
and when he strode off 18 with a nett 64 it was to be a clear
winning score. Tom Sturgeon was in form also and his gross 75
was converted to 66 nett to claim second prize which was
certainly impressive. Gerry Hogg took a number of bad bounces
and ill luck on the chin to battle bravely to a nett 67. This was to
secure third place from a batch of 69’s which included Trevor
Lucy, Paul Ramsey, Neil Corrigan and Russell Ferguson.
It was pleasing to see the familiar face of Michael Duffy back on
the course and Michael showed he has lost none of the talent he
had shown when he was a member in Enniskillen some years
ago. Playing as a visitor he shot a great gross 73 to take the
gross prize. Hopefully we will see a lot more of Michael in the
coming months.
A tremendous day of golf with thanks to the sponsors, Killyhevlin,
for their generosity and thanks to all who supported this very
successful Open day.
The PGA Tankard event was played on Saturday with the winner
travelling to Portadown for the N. Ireland finals on Monday and
the scoring was again of the highest order. Colum Reilly playing
off 19 was the best of the day with a nett 65 and he now
represents the Club in the finals. Stephen Gault is undoubtedly
the inform golfer in the club and he again played the course in
level par gross to finish with nett 67 and second place. Stephen
must surely be in contention for golfer of the year. Alan Weir also
had nett 67 and this took him to third place on countback.
The Blackbush weekend takes centre stage on Saturday and
Sunday with Enniskillen entertaining our twin Club from Dublin to
golf, snooker and other sporting competitions in what is sure to
be a fun filled weekend. Members who wish to compete should
see the notices in the locker rooms.
Ladies Section
The Lifeboat Charity Competition was played in beautiful
conditions and this worthy cause was well supported with a
great number of ladies taking part.
Kathleen Lavin set the pace with a grand round and 37points
and this looked like a winning score for a great part of the day.
On the course Tanya Greaves was playing steadily and when
she stood on the 6th tee she was about to play the shot all
golfers dream about. A perfectly judged seven iron nestled in the
cup for that wonderful hole in one. Tanya did not let this distract
her and she returned a points total equal to Kathleen’s and her
better back nine was enough to claim top prize.
Audrey King was again playing well and won the front nine prize
with 18 points while Irene Bowness recovered from a poor first
nine to record 19 points on the homeward nine and this was the
best of the day.
