Cycling: Kenny Boylan had a convincing win in the Ulster veterans Road Race Championships which were held at Nutts Corner Co. Antrim on Sunday. The 51 mile race which is always hotly contested by the best riders in Ulster region has never been won by a Lakeland rider before.

The riders were split into two groups with the weaker ones getting a two minute lead over Boylan's group. On the third lap, John Cole of Phoenix CC and Boylan made the decisive move when they went clear of the main bunch in pursuit of the race leaders. With the leaders in sight Boylan made a solo break to catch and pass the leaders like an express train, leaving them gasping as they tried unsuccessfully to latch onto his wheel as he went by. He quickly opened up a gap on the rest of the riders and by the end of the fourth lap he had just over 1 minute of a lead. All this time, the main bunch tried hard to bring him back but seemed to be making no progress as Boylan continued to storm ahead and by the bell on the final lap he had opened up a 2 minute lead which he held to the finish to take the gold medal and the title of Ulster Veterans Road Race Champion for 2002.

Afterwards a delighted Boylan said: "I did not expect to win such big race and I could not believe I had opened up such a big lead going into the final lap," before going on to say, "it was only then that I knew I could do it and there was no way I was going to let a lead like that slip away." He put his win down to all the hard training he did over the year and at their training camp in Spain earlier in the season, which he said made him much stronger over that sort of distances.

Last week the Club events continued with the 10 mile time trial league which is held on the Clabby course. At this stage of the season, all the riders produce their best times of the season and some even improve on their personal best times. Eddie Carson clocked up a fast time of 25min 11 sec to keep in contention for the prizes at the end of the season. Peter Jones put in a personal best time of 24 min 57 sec which will put him up with the top riders in this event. David Dunlop and Mark Mc Girr put in their best times of the season with Dunlop taking 3rd place some 18 seconds ahead of Mc Girr in 5th. Wesley Foster finished behind Boylan in 2nd place on the night but will be happy to hold on to the overall leaders spot in this season's time trial league.

Matthew Armstrong finished in a time of 29 min 42 sec which is his best time ever for this event. In the visitors’ league Patrick Withers of Fintona CC continues to dominate the top spot in the league even though he finished behind Gary Mc Kenna of Emyvale CC. Meanwhile close rivals Burns and David Flynn continued to do battle with Kevin taking 8th place just ahead of Flynn.
