Widespread sadness has been expressed following the sudden death of Thomas John Arthur Johnston on Wednesday, April 23.

Born on November 19, 1945, at Grouse Lodge, Pettigo, Co. Donegal, Tommy was the third eldest in a family of four of the late Jack and Kitty Johnston. He grew up at Grouse Lodge and moved with his family to Stragolan, Kesh at the age of eight years. He attended Dernasesk and Clonelly schools and Duke of Westminster, Kesh, until aged 15.

Tommy left home and went to work in England in the Dartford Tunnel and worked very hard there as a young lad for several years.

He came home and started working in the fishing industry in Kilkeel and sat for his skippers ticket. He succeeded in achieving that and then went on to own his own fishing boat. He worked in fishing for most of his life.

When fishing began to decline he decided to move to England and established himself in the construction business.

Home was always Fermanagh and Donegal where he frequently returned.

A service of thanksgiving was held in St. Mary’s Church, Ardess, Kesh and was led by Canon Dr. Johnston. The hymns were “Will your anchor hold”, “Abide with me” and “The Lord’s my Shepherd”. The organist was Mrs. Marion Loane.

Tommy is sadly missed by his sister Kathleen and partner Sammy; sister Margaret and husband Bertie, brother-in-law John, nephews Robert (Denyse), Jim, Jason (Shelley), grandnephews, grandnieces, Aunt Lily, cousins and the wider family circle.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by F. G. McFarland, Letterboy, Kesh.
