400 jobs to be created in cross-Border power project
More than 400 jobs are to be created in the South West Fermanagh border region with the development of two new projects launched this week in Teemore, Co. Fermanagh and Belturbet, Co. Cavan.

The Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) Power Team, in partnership with ESB, are engaged in a major refurbishment programme on the existing electricity transmission-distribution network in the Republic of Ireland. A considerable amount of new job opportunities will be created as a result of these contracts.

Two community development organisations - the South West Fermanagh Community Development Organisation and Belturbet Community Development Company - have come together to develop training facilities for the new jobs in the Distribution Electrical Engineering Sector and for a smaller number of jobs in the ICT sector that will be created through development of a new cross-border internet project.

A new Distribution Electrical Engineering Training School will be established adjacent to Teemore Business Complex to provide training with conference facilities at Belturbet Railway also being used for this purpose.

The cross-border community development company aim to attract young people of 16 years plus to serve a traineeship of up to two years, leading to a nationally recognised qualification, with secure job opportunities when qualified. Training opportunities will also be provided for the unemployed, under employed and those wishing to upgrade their careers in the rural area.

The second project the Teemore-Belturbet Business Partnership plan to develop is a new cross-border Internet service aimed to benefit a wide range of small businesses in the Fermanagh-Cavan area.

Graduates will be employed to work alongside local businesses to create new commerce from the internet. The project will see extensive cross-border activity and much improved contact between businesses in the North and South of Ireland.

Co-operation Ireland has made these projects possible through substantial EU Peace II financial support and professional advice on cross-border partnerships.

Management, trainees and operational staff for both projects will be based between Teemore and Belturbet, along with the new state-of-the-art training facility.

It is hoped the two initiatives will bring extensive new income to the region providing an economic spin off for local retail, hospitality and service industries, introducing a greatly enhanced income to many households.
