Motorcyling: The road-racing season really got underway on Saturday, with a dramatic Cookstown 100 meeting, made treacherous and unpredictable by the ever-changing road conditions. Enniskillen rider Richard Britton had a relatively successful day, with several top finishes, although a race win proved elusive.

Richard signed a new contract with Kawasaki during the close season and was involved in a dramatic race straight away with his new team, as he tussled with Darran Lindsay, Adrian Archibald and Ryan Farquhar in the Regal 600cc Race. At the beginning of the last lap, the top seven drivers were all within a stone's throw of one another, with Richard up among the front-runners. As the leading four blasted through to the end of the lap, back markers played a crucial role in the destiny of the race. The Enniskillen ace came off worse of the four riders, being held up as the other three cruised past him to take the podium positions.

The Lambert and Butler Open Race was Britton's second chance for a race win, but again cruel luck was to deprive him of a top two finish. The race began in dry conditions, but the heavens opened half way through to test every rider. With Britton in a comfortable third spot, Farquhar and Archibald were battling hard for the outright lead. In the end, the conditions got the better of Archibald, as he went down, seemingly handing Britton second spot. Just as the bikes were crossing the finishing line however, the fifth and sixth placed riders collided, and with the race red flagged before everyone had finished the lap, the result was taken a lap earlier, demoting Britton to third.

The Royal Hotel Cookstown Hotel was Britton's last outing of the day, and proved to be the most uneventful, as he cruised home to a lonely fourth spot.
