GAA: Enniskillen Gaels 4-08 Rosslea 2-11 – New manager Liam Donnelly saw his Enniskillen Gaels side get off to a winning start in the Fermanagh Senior League with the Gaels having three points to spare against newly promoted Rosslea.

Enniskillen showed their intent for this year by lining out a very strong side for their opening league encounter but Rosslea were to prove tricky opponents for them in what was an entertaining and closely fought game.

With Enniskillen having home advantage they would have been fancied to take the two points and they began the game well, opening up an early three point lead.

The ever accurate Tom Brewster notched two of these points from frees with Brian Smyth scoring the other point.

Rosslea hit back and levelled the scores after fifteen minutes. Eamon Sherry, who at centre half forward was the architect of most of Rosslea’s good play, opened their account and this was followed by points from midfielder James Sherry and one from a Kevin Boyle free.

A poor clearance though from Sean Boyle allowed Enniskillen to regain the advantage with Rory Judge firing to the Rosslea net.

Tom Brewster and Pio Fitzpatrick increased the Gaels’ lead further but Rosslea again were able to reply to this and points from Martin McAloon, Kevin Boyle, Eamon Sherry and a 50 from Johnny Mulligan left the minimum separating the sides at the break with the scores 1-5 to 0-7 in Enniskillen’s favour.

Ronan McCabe got Enniskillen off to a good start in the second half when he ran through the Rosslea defence and shot to the net to give Enniskillen a four point advantage.

Kevin Boyle and Tom Brewster then exchanged points to leave the scores 2-6 to 0-8 in Enniskillen’s advantage.

Rosslea though displayed good resilence and corner forward Martin McAloon brought them back into contention when he fisted the ball to the net.

At this stage the game was going end to end and when the impressive Ronan McCabe scored his second goal of the contest, Rosslea were able to reply immediately with Martin McAloon recording his second goal.

Kevin Cosgrove then pointed to draw the sides level at 3-6 to 2-9 but as they had been able to do throughout, Enniskillen once again managed to pull away.

Tom Brewster put the Gaels ahead with a free and then with five minutes remaining Colm Bradley fisted a high hopeful ball to the net.

James Sherry and Tom Brewster exchanged points before Kevin Boyle rounded off the scoring with a point from a free for Rosslea but it was Enniskillen who picked up the two points by 4-8 to 2-11.

The midfield proved a good battle between the Brewster brothers and James Sherry and Kevin Cosgrove, while Martin Renfrew and Eamon Sherry were also prominent for Rosslea.

For Enniskillen, Micky Lilly worked hard in defence while Ronan McCabe performed well in attack.
