The death took place unexpectedly on the
12th July, 2003 of Mr. Thomas Henry
Egerton (Tommy), late of Lisnavoe, Rosslea.
Tommy was born on 21st January, 1932 at Deerpark, Rosslea to John and
Florence Egerton, one of five children. He attended Rosslea Primary School
and started to help out on the family farm at an early age.
In 1959 he married Edith Carlton from Rockcorry, Co. Monaghan. They settled
into married life at Lisnavoe and had six children.
Tommy always lived life to the full and as well as working very hard on the
farm he also fitted in a number of pastimes. In his youth he was a keen
badminton and table tennis player; however, in more recent years his main
social activity was dancing and many will remember seeing Tommy and Edie
gliding around the dance floor.
He joined Inver Flute Band in 1954 and at one stage also had his six children
playing in the band with him. This reflected the type of man Tommy was, as he
loved to have his family around him and that was always when he was at his
happiest. He remained a band member until he eventually retired in 1997
after 43 years, even then, however, he decided to come out of retirement and
actually played for the band on the 12th July, 2002.
In 1955, on the 12th of July, Tommy had joined Inver L.O.L. and was parading
with them in Lisnaskea this year when he suddenly passed away.
During his time as a member of Inver L.O.L. he was secretary for 23 years and
was also a D.D.M. for Newtownbutler District. He was also a member of
Rosslea R.B.P. from 1969.
As an active member of Clogh Parish, he served on the Select Vestry for a
long number of years and was also Churchwarden on several occasions.
The funeral took place on Tuesday, 15th July from his family home where
there was a short service to Clogh Parish Church.
As the funeral procession passed Inver Hall it paused while members of Inver
Flute Band played “Nearer my God to Thee”, as a tribute to his longstanding
involvement with the band. The band also formed a guard of honour at the
church where the service was conducted by Canon Edwy Kille, assisted by
the Rev. Gilbert Egerton and the Rev. David Campbell, nephew and
nephew-in-law of Tommy.
The hymns were: “Because he lives I can face tomorrow” a personal favourite
and “What a friend we have in Jesus” and Psalm 23.
A short tribute to a wonderful husband, father and grandfather was read out by
two of his daughters, Irene and Florence and his son John.
The burial then took place in the adjoining graveyard with family flowers only
and all donations to Clogh Parish Church funds. There was an extremely
large attendance at the funeral which was a reflection of how well known and
popular he was.
Tommy was predeceased by his father (1970) and mother (1981).
He is survived by his wife Edith and his six children, Irene Clements
(Enniskillen); Ruth (London); John (Rosslea); Florence Hogg
(Maguiresbridge); Thelma Browne (Enniskillen); Amanda Keys (Fivemiletown)
and his brother Ernest (Coleraine); sisters, Irene (Londonderry); Pauline
(Preston); Marian (London), his mother-in-law Lily (Rockcorry); sons-in-law
and daughter-in-law and 13 grandchildren and the wider family circle.
Funeral arrangements were carried out by F. Dowler, Lisnaskea.
