Quick-acting staff escape flames
An early morning blaze caused considerable damage to the Peppercorn cafe at Townhall Street in Enniskillen on Monday.

Four members of staff were in the kitchen beginning to prepare food for the day when the fire started in the area of the deep fat fryer and hot plate. They escaped uninjured and raised the alarm as flames swept through the kitchen. Co-owner, Mrs. Patricia Egan, praised her staff for the way in which they responded to the blaze.

“They acted very quickly. It would have been a lot worse if they hadn’t,” she explained.

Mrs. Egan employs three full-time and three part-time staff in the popular cafe. She said the cause of the fire had still to be determined.

“It went up in flames so quickly,” she explained.

“The kitchen area is completely burnt out. The restaurant is all smoke damaged,” she added.

Two crews from Enniskillen Fire Station were quickly on the scene and brought the fire swiftly under control.

Mrs. Egan hopes to be back in business within the next four to six weeks.

“It was peak season and it’s a big loss at the moment. We have never had any problems in the 12 years we have been operating,” she stated.
