A threatened protest by members of the Rosslea Re-route Sectarian Marches group against Saturday's Royal Black Preceptory parade in the village has been called off.

Local Sinn Fein councillor, Mr. Brian McCaffrey, said the group objected to the Gordon and Nixon Memorial Temperance RBP 473 following its chosen route along Main Street.

In its determination the Commission states: "The parade is prohibited from proceeding along Main Street beyond the Royal Black Preceptory Hall."

Welcoming the decision to curtail the parade, Mr. McCaffrey said: "We are now cancelling the protest."

He renewed his call for the chairman of Fermanagh District Council, Ulster Unionist Harold Andrews, who is the Worshipful Master of the Preceptory, to enter into discussions on the future of all parades in South Fermanagh.

"I would urge him again, rather than go down this route on an annual basis, to initiate a discussion in Erne East with a view to resolving the parades issue in both Newtownbutler and Rosslea," said Mr. McCaffrey.

Mr. Andrews did not dismiss the idea of discussions taking place.

"I don't know what he is proposing. I would need to know what his proposals are before we enter into talks," he stated.

Mr. Andrews confirmed that he had received the Commission's determination curtailing Saturday's parade.

"Given what has happened in the past we are not surprised, but disappointed of course," he added.

The Commission has also given its determination on proposed RBP parades in Newtownbutler.

Lisnaskea Royal Black District Chapter No 2 had applied to parade from the Orange Hall to the Police Station on Saturday morning before going to join the main demonstration in Maguiresbridge and to follow the reverse route in the evening. However, the Commission has banned the return leg.

In its determination it stated: "The parade is prohibited from proceeding on any part of its notified return route on High Street and Main Street, Newtownbutler."

Local Sinn Fein Councillor Thomas O'Reilly said: "The Residents' Association is willing to have no protest with a view to encouraging both sides to sit down and have face to face talks which would resolve this situation once and for all."
