Tennis: Warm, sunny conditions and fast
courts greeted players arriving at
Enniskillen Lawn Tennis Club this week for
the West of Ulster Open Junior Tennis

T.B.F.Thompson(Garvagh) Ltd. A large entry of players from Counties Fermanagh, Tyrone, Armagh, Down,
Antrim, Donegal and Sligo are taking part in the six-day tournament this week
in all age groups from under 10s to under 18s and in singles, doubles and
mixed doubles competitions.
Like the weather, the competition has hotted up as the week has progressed
and by Wednesday the cream of the young talent was starting to rise to the
top with the first of the semifinals being reached in some age sections. The
Boys Under 14 and Under 16 singles competitions are well supported from
players from around the Ulster and Connacht. In the under 16 boys group,
only Omagh’s David Ward has booked a place in the semifinal.
In the Under 18 girls singles, there will be two exciting semifinals, the first
between Margaret Hennessy from Sligo and Heather Rainey, Omagh, while
Eilis Bogue from Enniskillen will be taking on her clubmate, Grainne Carron in
the second.
Play continues until Saturday when the finals and prizegiving will be held.
Monday’s Results: Under 12 Boys Singles: Brothers, Joseph and Edward
Doyle (Enniskillen) both recorded wins in their first matches of the tournament,
Joseph beating Conor Caheny (Sligo) 6-4, 6-4 while Edward was taken to
three sets before beating fellow Enniskillen member, Finn Corrigan 2-6, 7-5,
6-4. Other results; Aodan Bryant (Enniskillen) beat Glen Mowat (Enniskillen)
6-2, 6-4; Stephen Butler (Sligo) beat Aodan Bryant (Enniskillen) 6-0, 6-4.
Under 14 Boys Singles:Andrew Little (Enniskillen) beat Kevin Davey 4-6, 6-2,
6-2 and Conor Davey beat Adam Donaldson 6-3, 7-6.
Under 16 Boys Singles: Kelvin McElroy (Irvinestown), booked a place in the
quarter-finals after beating Michael Bryant (Enniskillen) 6-0, 6-1. Other
results: Tim Hyndman (Omagh) beat James Wilson (Enniskillen) 6-0, 6-1 and
David Ward (Omagh) beat Jonathan Turley (Enniskillen) 6-0,6-1.
