A member of The Fermanagh Times printing
staff for 50 years, Mr. Leo Nolan, late of
Windmill Heights, Enniskillen, died
peacefully on August 13, 2003, aged 92
years. His passing, following a period of
declining health, occurred at Drumclay
Nursing Home, Enniskillen. His funeral
service took place on the date of his 65th
wedding anniversary.A “townie”, Leo, a much-loved husband, father and grandfather, was born
between the bridges at Dame Street, Enniskillen.
After attaining his education, he took up employment in the Fermanagh Times,
where he gave 50 years’ service as a machine operator.
Football was a major passion throughout his life for Leo, who played for
Corinthians Football Club for a number of years.
He had played billiards and snooker and he enjoyed following tennis. His
garden also gave Leo great pleasure.
In his younger years, he played the drums in the Gratten Band.
Sixty-five years ago, Leo married Josephine Carney, of Market Street, best
known as Cissie. Their marriage ceremony at St. Michael’s Church,
Enniskillen, was led by Monsignor Tierney.
After their marriage, the couple made their first home at Belmore Street,
Enniskillen, and remained in the lakeland town ever since.
Of their family of eight children (three sons and five daughters), six are
surviving; Gregory, Margaret, Delores, Veronica, Jim and Geraldine.
Leo’s funeral service took place at St. Michael’s Church, led by Monsignor
Cahill. Family members participated in the service, including Leo’s
grand-daughter, Eileen, who led readings.
Burial took place at Breandrum Cemetery, Enniskillen.
Leo, the last of his family, is survived by his wife, Cissie; his sons and
daughters; 13 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Marie and his baby son (the couple’s
first-born).
The funeral arrangements were by Enda Love and Sons, Braeside Park,
Enniskillen.
