Young clubbers heading for the weekend
Planet Love dance event were stopped and
searched by police carrying out a drugs
operation.Police seized 76 ecstasy tablets and 46g of cannabis resin when they
stopped two buses in the Fivemiletown and Tempo areas on Saturday.
Head of operations, Inspector John Maxwell, said the young people had
gathered at Gaol Square in Enniskillen to travel by bus to Shane’s Castle in
Co Antrim, where the dance event was held.
Acting on a tip-off, police stopped two buses en route and searched the
vehicles and passengers.
Ecstasy tablets and cannabis were discovered on the floor where they had
been dumped. No arrests were made and investigations are continuing.
Inspector Maxwell said Ecstasy was less of a problem in Fermanagh than in
other areas but police had the suppliers in their sights and were making a
push to interrupt supplies at an early stage.
“We are keen to get on top of it. The main thrust is to get the suppliers rather
than concentrating all our resources on people who are taking them for their
own use,” he said.
“It is an ongoing priority of ours in relation to drugs that we concentrate on the
suppliers and make sure they don’t get the leeway to ply their evil trade.”
In all, 41 young people who appeared to be in their late teens and early 20s
were taken off the buses and searched before continuing on their way, he
said.
Drug suppliers were only interested in profit - not the welfare of those used
who used their products, he said.
The dealers cut the drug with all sorts of substances to make it go further. One
batch of Ecstasy seized recently had been cut with rat poison, Inspector
Maxwell said.
“I would say to people that they should be sure of what their young people are
getting up to, because the suppliers are trying to make as big a profit as they
can,” he said.
“Some of the ingredients, especially in the likes of Ecstasy, are dubious to say
the least.”
