The new school formed by the
amalgamation of Enniskillen High School
and the Duke of Westminster High Schools
will be called Devenish College, it was
announced this week. The school will be located on a greenfield site on the Tempo Road near
Killyvilly outside Enniskillen.
The newly amalgamated secondary level school will come into existence in
September 2004 with both High Schools adopting the new title of Devenish
College but continuing to operate on a split site basis. It is estimated that the
college’s new single site accommodation will not be complete until
September 2008.
The announcements were made at the first meeting of the school’s Interim
Board of Governors last week where Canon Raymond Thompson was
elected as Chairman and Mr. Alex Baird appointed as Vice-Chairman.
“We have a very busy time ahead of us but those involved in the
amalgamation are excited about the future because we will be providing a
state of the art school for that (11-18 years) sector of education in
Fermanagh,” said Canon Thompson.
The new school is planned to accommodate approximately 800 pupils and an
economic appraisal is currently underway to assess the school’s
accommodation requirements.
The Western Education and Library Board have determined that time scale for
completion of the new school will be dependent on approvals and funding
from the Department of Education.
Canon Thompson explained that a sub-committee had been formed to look at
the new school’s criteria during the recent Board of Governors’ meeting.
“The school’s criteria has yet to be established and further sub-committees
are to be set in place, however, the Board of Governors is proceeding with the
appointment of a new principal immediately,” he said.
The next meeting of the amalgamated school’s Interim Board of Governors
will take place on September 30.
