FOOTBALL: Mercer League Division One - As far as no-score draws are concerned this was an entertaining match.

The home side will be slightly more disappointed. The bottom of the league team missed several glorious chances to break the deadlock, a combination of bad finishing and superb goalkeeping from Ryan Kinnear the main reasons for a scoreless draw.

Town started the better, their left-hand side of Eamon Reilly, Malcolm Crawford and Mark Connolly were tormenting Kesh. Reilly, playing his first game of the season was particularly impressive with his willingness to attack his counterpart Trevor Farrell.

However, their first clear cut chance after nine minutes came from a long ball out of defence by Jimmy Murphy. Kesh surged forward in the hope of an offside decision. Martin McGourty burst through from midfield to face Kinnear. McGourty shot early and wide of the Kesh post.

Rory Judge headed over from a McGourty cross on the right as Town got on top.

Reilly beat two defenders on the left. He cut into the box and shot only to be denied by Kinnear, who palmed the ball away. McGourty and Judge got in each other’s way as they attempted to score from the rebound. As the ball broke to safety, Kesh surged forward on the break. Darren McKeever found Mark Jones on the right flank, who picked out Kevin Kane 25 yards from goal, Kane struck first time but Malcolm Branley made a good stop in the Town goals.

Town were still looking the most likely to score. Matt Holden and McGourty were playing well in centre field, while Kinnear continued to deny Reilly who shot at every opportunity.

Kinnear produced a quite superb save after 37 minutes. Town midfielder Paul Judge let fly from 30 yards which looked destined for the top corner. Kinnear managed to get a slight touch to push the ball onto the crossbar and away to safety – a magnificent shot from Judge, matched by the agility of Kinnear.

Town had to be careful at the back as the threat of Jones was always there. His pace caused problems but he lacked support.

Kinnear finished the half on a high when he pushed a Rory Judge curler round the post.

Kesh improved in the second half. Kane started to get to grips with the midfield, while their defence looked much more compact. Jones missed a chance after 56 minutes, heading over from six yards with Branley stranded. Holden made a great run through midfield, he found Rory Judge who was denied by Kinnear once again.

Town lost the services of Connolly after 64 minutes when he disagreed with the referee, who showed him a second yellow card for dissent.

Town re-organised and never really looked in danger. Centre half Emmett Carty missed from four yards at the back post. Judge and Eugene Wynne had chances to score, but the day belonged to Kesh keeper Ryan Kinnear who was outstanding.

Kesh boss Derek Moran agreed: “Ryan was without doubt ‘man of the match’. It’s nice to keep a clean sheet with a battling performance. Town are a decent side and will turn the corner, but I’m pleased with a point”, said Derek, his side turning in a better second half performance.

Town couldn’t beat Kinnear. The sending off did not have a bearing on the result. Town played much better and if they continue to keep clean sheets they will get out of the relegation zone.

This week’s Junior Cup fixtures will give both sides a welcome break from the league.
