GAA: Harp Lager Senior Championship Quarter-final Replay - Kinawley 2-07; Tempo 1-08 - With three minutes remaining of this quarter final replay, Tempo looked to be cruising through to the semifinals.

They were controlling the game possession wise and Kinawley looked like a beaten side, but despite their majority of possession Tempo were only two points to the good, and as has been said before, two points is a dangerous lead to have, and this proved to be the case.

A long ball out of defence by Kinawley broke favourably to Garret Owens and he drove the ball past Gary Howe in the Tempo goal to move his side into a one point lead.

Full forward Owens followed this up with a quick point to put two between them and Kinawley held on to this lead to secure themselves a spot in the semifinal against St. Patrick’s this Sunday.

Tempo will feel that it should have been them that progressed after they had enjoyed lots of possession throughout the game, but they struggled to break down a tenacious Kinawley defence as Kinawley got plenty of men behind the ball and preferred the quick long ball to a two man full forward line of Owens and Shaun Doherty, while Sean Leonard worked hard to get up and support them.

Tempo had opportunities early in the game to get off the mark, but midfielders Ciaran McElroy and Brian Jackson both saw shots fall short into the keepers hands.

They did though open the scoring with a point from half back Damian Kelly. Kinawley replied to this with three unanswered points as they began to assert themselves on the proceedings.

Darren Boyle opened their account with a pointed free. Sean Leonard added to this with a point after he had dispossessed Dermot Curran and a third point in a three minute spell came from a fine effort from Shaun Doherty.

Ryan Keenan closed the gap to a point with a point from a free, but Darren Boyle shot his second score to leave the scores 0-04 to 0-02 after twelve minutes.

Kinawley failed to register another score for thirty minutes as Tempo began to take control of the encounter.

Their midfield of Ciaran McElroy and Brian Jackson were winning a lot of possession, while their half back line also picked up a lot of breaks.

In attack Ryan Keenan was causing difficulties for the Kinawley rearguard when he ran at them, and he added on a point from a free following a foul on himself.

Kinawley were now only hitting Tempo with the odd attack, but they nearly had a goal when on one of these attacks Shaun Doherty found Garret Owens, but his shot came back off the post.

Ciaran McElroy levelled the scores with a point and this was to be the last score of the half, although Tempo should have been ahead at the interval.

Brian Jackson put Tempo ahead when he pointed in the opening minute of the second half and this lead was increased to two points when Jackson was on hand to tag on his second point shortly after.

With Tempo now well on top Ryan Keenan added another point to give them a 0-07 to 0-04 advantage and they looked comfortable, but a badly needed goal from Shaun Doherty brought Kinawley back into the game.

Doherty collected a long ball from Matthew Drumm, ran through at goal and shot to the net.

This though was only a temporary respite for Kinawley with Tempo replying with a quick 1-01 to give themselves a four point lead with fourteen minutes left.

Ryan Keenan exchanged passes with Stephen Cox before firing over a good point and this was followed by a Shane Foy goal.

Ciaran McElroy’s shot came back off the upright but fell favourably to Foy and he easily palmed the ball to the goal.

Tempo continued to dominate the play, but they were to add no further scores to their tally.

Garret Owens volleyed over following a ball played in by Cathal Murphy and Darren Boyle converted a free to leave two points separating the sides, but time seemed to be running out.

Then came the dramatic finish to the game with Garret Owens late 1-01 sealing the win for Kinawley and their place in the Senior Championship semifinal.
