Castle Hume youngsters half way to famous triumph
GOLF: Castle Hume Golf Club – Fred Daly Plate Final - Castle Hume are half way through their first ever appearance in the final of a GUI backed competition, and the young Fred Daly Plate finalists have put themselves in with a real chance of glory after a narrow 4-3 loss to Rathmore in the away leg of the two legged final.

Their Portrush based opponents must have entered the final as favourites, but despite the difference in the size of the panel that the two clubs can pick their team from, it was the smaller Fermanagh outfit that finished the day as the happier side.

Leading the team out in the opening match was captain Chris McVitty, and when he won the 17th hole to pull his match back to all square it looked as though he might open the scoring for the visitors. His opponent responded in spectacular style however, birdieing the final hole for a one shot victory.

Behind Chris, however, his teammates were putting points on the board. Donal McAvenue was the first to celebrate when he closed out his match on the penultimate green for a 2&1 victory, and Richard Moore was another who rose to the occasion, covering 14 holes in one under par as he demolished his opponent 5&4.

It looked as though John Wilson would add point number three when he went two ahead with two holes remaining, but his Rathmore opponent halved the deficit with a win on the 17th. Both players knocked their approach shots at the last hole into the greenside bunker, and when John failed to get out of the sand trap it looked as though the points would be shared. John had different ideas however and got up and down for a bogey five, which was enough to win the match.

Rathmore hit back to level the tie at 3-3 when both Connor McGinley and Paul Duffy lost their matches, leaving the last match featuring Andrew Little as the decider. Never ahead of his rival, Andrew closed the gap to one hole with one to play, and when the Rathmore golfer failed to get out of the bunker on the last hole Andrew was hopeful of snatching half a point. In a reversal of John Wilson’s match however, the home golfer got up and down from the sand to clinch the match and with it an overall victory by four points to three.

Team coach Alan Sharpe, who admitted he would have been happy to take two points off his illustrious opponents, is now hoping to lead his side to what would be a famous victory. The second leg tees off at 1.00pm this Sunday, but having lost the home leg of the semi-final, the team is well aware that they will have to be at the pinnacle of their game if they are to ensure that the Fred Daly Plate makes its home at Castle Hume for the next 12 months.
