RUGBY: Fletcher-Pollock Cup - Enniskillen 1st XV 34; Cavan 1st XV 7 - Last Saturday saw the annual Fletcher-Pollock Cup match take place between Enniskillen 1st XV and Cavan 1st XV.

In the entertaining fixture Enniskillen were victorious with a convincing score of 34-7.

Captain Colin Farrell was delighted with the scoreline but also admitted that the display showed up areas where plenty of work was needed.

He commented: “It was not too bad. There were some good parts to our play. We had great continuity and our handling was excellent but balanced against that our rucking was pretty shocking and we made some very basic errors.”

That said, the Skins started well and in the 10th minute some flowing play by Skins provided Chris Welsh with the opportunity to score a try. He side-stepped three Cavan men to score in the corner. The score was converted by Chris Thompson.

Young Darren Cochrane, who is enjoying his first season playing at 1st XV level, scored another Skins try. Gareth Armstrong converted on this occasion. Hence, just before half-time Armstrong kicked a penalty to Skins in a commanding 17-0.

The introduction of talented youth players such as Darren Cochrane will be a feature this year says Farrell as the club hopes to get their league season off to a good start against Rainey on Saturday.

“We have not signed any players this summer as such,” says Colin. “But what we do have is a couple of young players such as Darren Cochrane, Gary Hall and Gavin Warrington who are maturing as players and are ready to make an impact in the 1st XV and that is encouraging. What we are trying to achieve is a 1st XV and 2nd XV squad as opposed to two separate teams.”

The Club Captain intends to lead by example and at the start of the second half on Saturday last he showed outstanding support play to take the ball in the twenty-two and sprint home to score a great try. Armstrong again kicked well to convert and ensure a maximum return of seven points from the score.

Although Skins looked very much in control, scrappy rucking allowed many turnovers thus leading to Cavan scoring a break-away try.

Soon afterwards Skins got their second wind and reasserted in the last 10 minutes with two tries from Davy Flack and Colin Farrell. Their superior fitness was evident.

Post match, the Fletcher-Pollock Cup was presented to Enniskillen 1st XV Coach Johnny Gibson.

This Saturday will be the Skins first League fixture of the season when they meet Rainey O.B 1st XV at Mullaghmeen. Rainey will provide much tougher opposition, a point not lost on Farrell.

He reveals: “We will have to up the ante on Saturday. Rainey seem to have quite a few players in the Junior Ulster squad and with that squad’s emphasis being placed on youth, then they must have a good young side. While we will not be putting all our eggs in one basket and saying we must win this opening fixture, it is imperative that we get off to a good start and ensure a stable footing before Christmas.”

With Enniskillen, Clogher and Omagh all in the one section, Colin expects Junior Qualifying One to be as intense as ever this season.

“It is going to be good with the rivalry between the three local teams as great as ever, but that is what it is all about and we are looking forward to the challenge, starting with Rainey on Saturday,” concludes Colin.

Match kick off is at 2.30pm and a large attendance is expected.
