The unexpected death took place
peacefully at the Erne Hospital,
Enniskillen, on Thursday, March 4,
2004, of Johnston Hetherington, late
of 19 Burfit’s Hill Road, Irvinestown. The eldest son of May Hetherington, of Glencoonra,
Ballinamallard and the late Walter Hetherington, Johnston was
born in Enniskillen in 1934.
After leaving school, he went to work in McBrien’s grocery shop,
Ballinamallard.
In later years, he joined the Northern Ireland Housing Executive
as a van driver and later became store keeper. Due to
re-organisation, he took early retirement.
In 1963, he married Ivy Johnston, from Ardlougher, Irvinestown
and they made their home at Burfit’s Hill.
Johnston, a supportive neighbour and a friend to all, had been a
very active figure and he enjoyed helping his mother and brother
on the family farm.
Johnston had been loyal to his church and he was dedicated to
Drumharvey Pipe Band for many years. As a fitting tribute, the
band formed a guard of honour and played a lament at his
funeral. He had also been a member of Magheracross
Temperance L.O.L. 823.
The largely attended funeral service at Derryvullen North Parish
Church, Irvinestown, on Saturday, March 6, was conducted by
Canon Raymond Thompson, who delivered a tribute to Johnston
and spoke highly of his involvement in the church and the
community.
The congregation read Psalm 23 and the hymns were: What A
Friend We Have in Jesus and Nearer, My God, To Thee. Burial
took place at the adjoining churchyard.
Johnston is survived by his wife, Ivy; his mother, May; his
brothers, Walter and Alex; and all the family circle.
Donations in lieu of flowers were to Derryvullen North Parish
Church, and to the Intensive Care Unit, Erne Hospital,
Enniskillen, c/o funeral directors, S.R. Elliott’s.
The funeral arrangements were by S.R. Elliott and Sons, Darling
Street, Enniskillen and Fivemiletown.
