Don is the cream of Fermanagh milkmen
Milkman Don Clarke will be representing Co Fermanagh in the final of the Northern Ireland Milkman of the Year 2004 competition.

He beat off stiff competition in the regional heats to be named ‘Co Fermanagh’s Best Milkman’.

Don, who was nominated by long-standing customer Maisie Fleming, will compete against six other regional finalists on Tuesday next, March 30 at Belfast Castle for the coveted title of Northern Ireland Milkman of the Year 2004.

The 48-year-old milkman from Fivemiletown and milk distributor for Ballyrashane, Enniskillen, has been a milkman for over 30 years, starting as a helper when he left school and when the owner retired he took over the round. He has 650 customers in the Co Fermanagh area and delivers to his customers five days a week during unsociable hours come rain, hail or shine. Maisie Fleming from Derrin Road, Enniskillen, who nominated Don for the award said; “Despite great personal tragedy, Don has never lost his cheery spirit and is very reliable and obliging. I have been getting milk from Don for many years and he has never let me down, he is a real gentleman. I will keep my fingers crossed for him on the day of the final.”

Don said, “I am delighted with the nomination and it is wonderful to know that customers like Maisie Fleming value the work I do. I am well used to the unusual working hours after so many years! “Weather conditions through the years have made my job that bit more difficult on occasions. In this job no two days are ever the same and getting to know some of the characters on my rounds has been great. I am really looking forward to the final in Belfast Castle.”

Mike Johnston, Chief Executive for the Dairy Council said; “The aim of the competition is to recognise the special service that milkmen provide and to highlight the value of the Home Milk Delivery Service to the local community.” All finalists and nominators receive £100 each for reaching the final stages of the competition. The overall winner of Northern Ireland Milkman of the Year 2004 will receive a further £500, as will their nominator.
