GAA: Ulster Minor League -
Fermanagh 0-7 Donegal 1-5 –
Fermanagh were very unfortunate to
lose their opening game in the Ulster
Minor League when they lost out by a
single point to Donegal at
Irvinestown.Fermanagh were the better side throughout the game and led
right up to the death but a goal for Donegal with three minutes
remaining, tied the game before a pointed free sealed the win for
the visitors.
Conditions proved very difficult for both sides with a strong wind
as well as being slippery underfoot but with the advantage of the
breeze in the first half, Fermanagh took control and dominated
the play, going in at the interval leading 0-5 to 0-1.
Corner forward, Pat Cadden, who had a good first half, was
among the points as was defender Cathal McCaffrey, while full
forward Seamus Ryder was influential.
The Fermanagh lead at the break could have been greater but
they missed a couple of chances including a great opportunity
for a goal.
It was real backs to the wall stuff in the second half as Donegal
aided by the breeze, piled on the pressure, but Fermanagh
defence stood up well to this with Ryan Dolan in particular
impressive.
Points from Pat Cadden and centre half forward Terry
O’Flanagan kept Fermanagh ahead and with three minutes left
they held a 0-7 to 0-4 lead.
It was then though that Donegal struck for the games only goal.
A high ball led to a mistake in the defence and a Donegal
forward reacted quickest to knock the ball to the net.
This was then followed by an injury time free to deny Fermanagh.
Manager Gerry Moane was pleased with his sides display.
“It was a good performance given the conditions and the fact that
it was only our second outing. The effort that was put in could not
be faulted,” he said.
Fermanagh’s preparations continue with training this week and
a final trial game on Saturday with the next league game fixed for
Saturday week away to Cavan.
