Mrs. Mary Treacy from Boho died peacefully in the Erne Hospital on Monday, May 21 at the end of a final short period there. She was 86 years old.
Over the past few years Mary endured indifferent health with occasional periods of hospitalisation.
Born on Christmas Day, 1925, she was the second child of five for the late James and Margaret Doherty, Gortgall, Boho. As a girl, she attended the local national school at Tullyholvin, Boho. After leaving school in her early teens, she helped maintain the family farm and indeed often assisted neighbours with their chores.
In 1952 she married Paddy Treacy, a local farmer at Lesky, Boho. Together they raised a family of six -- five sons and a daughter -- namely Michael (Maureen), Jim (Eileen), Anthony (Anne), Thomas (Geraldine), Gerry (Rita) and Mamie (Frankie).
Mary was a devoted housewife and mother working with great effort over the years tending to her family and assisting in the running of the family farm. Aside from her main duties, she loved to garden, pray, read, visit, travel locally and entertain family, friends and neighbours in her own home.
She was a woman with deep faith and religious beliefs, consistently attending mass and receiving the sacraments. This was a trait she maintained right to the end as shown by how much she apprecaited visits from clergy and lay ministers while unable to leave her home towards the end of her life.
Remarkably, later on in life Mary, with great determination, managed to achieve her driving qualification. She could then often be seen motoring along the local roads in her red Fiesta as she travelled independently to shop, pray and make visits.
By her late seventies Mary went to reside chiefly at Belcoo with her daughter Mamie and family, by whom she was greatly cared for. Frankie and Darren gave her abundant support and kindness. All were duly assisted by wonderful carers, members of the medical profession and hospital staff. The family are very appreciative of all the care she received.
With failing health and being chiefly house-bound, she treasured greatly the many visits from family and numerous friends. Thomas and Elizabeth were especially devoted to her. She was a very good conversationalist and luckily maintained notable mental alertness, almost to her parting from this life.
Sadly in 2003, Mary was predeceased by her youngest son Gerry. This was a sore cross for her to bear but her great faith kept her going. Her husband Paddy died in 2008 aged 90 years. She was also predeceased by her sister Tessie Love and brothers Thomas and Joe.
Mary is immediately survived by her last remaining sibling, Bridie McManus (Enniskillen), her sister-in-law Nuala O'Doherty (Dublin), her own family, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and the wider family circle.
After her death, her remains were conveyed to her daughter and son-in-law's home in Belcoo where the wake took place.
The funeral mass was celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church, Boho on Wednesday, May 23 at 12 noon. The celebrants were the Very Rev. Fr. Lorcan Lynch and Fr. Stephen Joyce. Afterwards Mary's remains were laid to rest in the family plot of the adjoining cemetery. The funeral arrangements were carried out by John Corrigan, undertaker from Derrygonnelly and assisted by Peter Carty, undertaker from Garrison.
After a long and wholesome life, Mary will be fondly remembered by her numerous family members, friends and the wider community.
