A 61-year-old man with three convictions for drinking and driving attacked a woman in her bed after drinking a bottle of whiskey.

Stanley Cadden, of Mill Street, Enniskillen, admitted assaulting the woman but despite his record does not accept he has an alcohol problem.

He was put on probation for 12 months on condition that he participates in an alcohol and drug management and treatment programme.

A prosecutor told Fermanagh Court that around 6.30pm on Tuesday, June 19, police were called to Fortview Park, Lisbellaw, about an alleged assault. Cadden had blood on his face and a woman had blood around her mouth. She said she had been in bed sleeping when she was awoken by Cadden punching her around the head and that she had defended herself.

Defence barrister, Mr. Stephen Mooney, said Cadden's injuries were as bad as the woman's injuries.

He said Cadden had drank a bottle of whiskey prior to this happening and in the past 10 years has been convicted of three drinking and driving offences.

District Judge Mervyn Bates told Cadden the probation board had asked for a full report "because you don't seem to think you have any issues with alcohol. You clearly do.

"I really hope you recognise your problem and get to grips with dealing with it," he added.
