CASHEL Community Centre came alive with excitement recently as 20 young people from Rossinver, Garrison, Kiltyclogher and Cashel came together to have their say about what youth activities they would like to see in their areas.

The fun evening on Friday, September 28, gave young people an opportunity to engage in many activities such as team-building exercises, games, discussions, planning and a free raffle. Two groups went head to head in an exciting,team-buildingnewspaper fashion show competition, where young people challenged their creativity and worked together to develop holiday themed costumes.

Using merely newspaper and cello tape, two fantastic creations were developed.

The young people also worked together as they devised youth activity ideas, voicing their opinions on what they'd like Forige's new PEACE III Leitrim Youth Support project to involve in their area.

Zumba, DVD nights and trips away were just some of the ideas the young people suggested.

Barriers which young people feel prevent them from mixing and getting to know one another on a cross border basis were also explored. Many young people stated that there have beenno opportunities to mixon a cross border basis and cited this as a main barrier. The event was organised jointly by Dolores McSharry of the Gillaroo Communities Project funded by the International Fund for Ireland, Leitrim Development Company and Leitrim County Council, and Siobhn Keaney, Project Officer with Forige's PEACE III Leitrim Youth Support project, which has been funded by the PEACE III Programme through the European Union's European Regional Development Fund managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by Leitrim County Council on behalf of Co Leitrim PEACE III Partnership.

This project will seek to provide an opportunity for young people to mix in a safe, creative environment, where they can explore their attitudes and ideas, whilst jointly engaging in fun, developmental activities on a cross border and cross community basis. The information from the consultation is currently being compiled and a series of activities based around the feedback will be planned with the young people as part of the PEACE III Leitrim Youth Support Project.
