A 21-year-old man charged with shoplifting allegedly threatened a store security guard with the bottle of rum he is accused of stealing, Fermanagh Court has heard.

Paul Monaghan, of Killynure Gardens, Enniskillen, was on bail on an attempted burglary charge at the time and in breach of a curfew.

He appeared at Fermanagh Court charged with stealing a bottle of rum worth 17 from Asda in Enniskillen and possession of an offensive weapon, namely the bottle, on October 13.

A police officer told the court she was aware of the facts and circumstances of the case and believed she could connect Monaghan with the charges.

Opposing bail, the officer said Monaghan committed the offences while on bail for the alleged attempted burglary of a house on the Dublin Road in Enniskillen on May 2, when it was believed he was disturbed.

Referring to the shoplifting and possession of an offensive weapon charges, the officer said Monaghan had confronted a security guard and threatened him with the bottle.

The court heard that Monaghan was arrested as he got out of a taxi at his home at 10.15 that evening.

Defence solicitor, Mr. Gary Smyth, submitted that Monaghan was returning home to comply with his curfew.

He said the charge was denied.

Mr. Smyth said Monaghan's mother had suggested he could be tagged and that would alert the police if he breached his curfew.

Deputy District Judge Terence Dunlop said he would re-release Monaghan on bail but "crank up" the conditions by enforcing the curfew with an electronic tag.

The case was adjourned until November 12.
