Nearly one in 10 adults believe they will never retire, while a further one in eight expect to be aged between 71 and 80 years old when they do, research has found.

A joint study by Co-op Funeralcare and Co-op Legal Services found that 9% of adults believe their working lives will never end, while a further 12% expect to be between the ages of 71 and 80 when they retire.

Women were found to be more likely than men to put off retirement, the findings also suggested.

Further research, carried out specifically among people aged over 50, found that one in five (21%) said they had chosen to work for longer because they liked their job.

But financial concerns were also a key reason for delaying retirement among the over-50s, with 22% saying they needed to keep working due to a lack of retirement funds.

For 11% of over-50s, retirement was not an option due to having debts to pay off, while 7% still had mortgage repayments to fulfil.

A further 8% of those surveyed kept working due to financially supporting their children for longer than expected.

The research was taken from a survey of 2,000 adults across the UK as well as a survey of more than 1,000 people aged over 50.
