A well-known and highly regarded 102-year-old, James McDonnell - one of Irvinestown’s oldest men - passed away peacefully on Monday (February 1).

Having followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Hugh, whom he says “lived to be over 100,” James, from outside Irvinestown, had enjoyed living life to the full.

A son of James McDonnell and the former Ellen Jane McCaughey, there were seven in the family. He was educated at Aghagaffert School, where he remained until he was 14. He married the late Bridget Allen and they had two sons, Seamus and Gerard and a daughter Marie, who survive him.

Farming featured prominently throughout his life for James, who “milked cows and ploughed the land with horses.” Retirement only came in his 80s for the sprightly figure, who had always enjoyed good health.

At the time of his 100th milestone, he shared the belief that hard work had contributed to his long life and healthy eating.

Among his interests were traditional music, listening to the radio and he was keen on local history. He had also been “a great man for poetry,” and along with his brother William (who survives him), he often recited poems.

A grandfather of two, he loved people coming to ceilidh at his home and he delighted in conversation.

A requiem mass for James was held on Wednesday, February 3, at the Sacred Heart Church, Irvinestown, followed by burial in the adjoining churchyard.
