WHEN it comes to cooking treats for charitable causes, Gladys Turner, from Florencecourt, is a dab hand.
Whether she is baking traybakes, pancakes, potato bread, boiled cakes, or making jams, Gladys always manages to work wonders for her chosen beneficiary.
Only recently, Diabetes UK Fermanagh branch, represented by Ann Harland, Secretary, was presented with a cheque for £4,000 - thanks to Gladys’ latest fundraising efforts.
She enjoys baking and has been using her talents to raise funds for different causes for over 25 years. Among recipients have been cancer charities, including those for children’s cancer. She has engaged in efforts for Parkinson’s in the past, while others to receive backing have been arthritis and heart charities and the Talking Newspaper.
Any and every charity has received support from Gladys, who enjoys ‘giving’ to them. She feels she is “helping someone worse off” than herself. “That’s how I look at it,” says Gladys, who over the years has turned out a lot of baking. In addition, she holds charity whist drives which also serve as good fundraisers. “People who play are very generous,” she said.
While Diabetes is her most recent beneficiary, she already has a charity - a children’s cancer charity - in mind for this year.
