One of Fermanagh’s best known, long serving pharmacists, Herby Follis from Enniskillen was recently treated to a surprise party to mark his 80th birthday.

The event - to mark his special milestone - was held at the Taphouse, Enniskillen, on January 22, and Herby turned 80 the next day, January 23.
“It was an absolutely fabulous time,” acknowledged Herby afterwards, who admitted that he was “completely surprised” by the celebrations, which he greatly enjoyed. “I did not expect it at all,” admitted the delighted birthday boy, who is thankful to everyone who joined him.

A well-known and popular figure in the county, Herby’s long career in pharmacy spanned many years from he qualified in 1959.
In 1964, he opened his own pharmacy in Belmore Street, Enniskillen, which was formerly Maxwell’s Chemist and he traded as Maxwell’s until 1980.

After 30 years in business in Enniskillen, he sold the shop in 1994. He continued to work for the new owners, Donaldson and Lee, for a number of years.

In 2002, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent treatment, and on his return to work, he worked with Siobhan O’Reilly in Tempo one day a week.

He became a registered pharmacist in the Republic of Ireland and worked in a number of locations across the border, including Scotstown.

He then started working for Paul Hughes in Newtownbutler from 2009 and was there until he retired in 2015. Herby will continue to go there half a day a week (Thursday mornings) for consultations.

For him, his career in pharmacy proved an enjoyable one, spanning from his qualification right through to retirement.

Joined by family and friends for his surprise 80th birthday party, the occasion went well for Herby, who delighted in the company he was in. Entertainment was provided by the guests and included songs and recitations.
