A proposed 75 kilometre greenway cycle route from Sligo to Enniskillen has reached the second stage of its funding application.

Based on the popular Great Western Greenway in County Mayo – a 42 kilometre pathway for walkers and cyclists running from Westport to Achill island – the Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway Greenway Project would run along the old SLNCR railway line from Manorhamilton to Enniskillen.

The project proposes to covert the old railway line into a multi-user trail for walkers, cyclists and the mobility challenged.

In January 2016, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council submitted a stage one application for funding for the Project to the Interreg Programme, in partnership with Leitrim County Council and Cavan County Council.
This application was successful and a stage two application for funding has to be submitted by next Friday, April 22. The Council expects that, by next Friday, the proposed route from Belcoo to the Derrylin Road, Enniskillen will be identified and landowner reactions will be known. However, landowner agreements and planning permission will not be in place by that date.
