John McCusker, who has led the Enniskillen branch of the Royal British Legion as Chairman for the past number of years, is to receive the BEM.
John and his wife, Jean and family, have been celebrating the occasion with a family get-together at their home at Brackwede Park, Enniskillen, over the weekend.
The honour has brought great pride and joy for John, who said: “It was definitely the best moment of my life bar the day I got married.”
But he says he has received the BEM on behalf of all his colleagues in the Royal British Legion.
John has been a member of the Royal British Legion for 46 years and became Club Chairman 10 years ago, a position he held for three years before being elected Branch Chairman and has held this post since.
It has been during John’s Chairmanship that the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny T.D. first attended the annual Remembrance Day service in Enniskillen in 2013, and has returned each year since. John was also involved with establishing links with the Organisation of National Ex-Servicemen and Women(O.N.E.) in the Republic and particularly the Cootehill Branch. The Enniskillen Branch paraded with them at their annual ceremony in August and they took part in the Enniskillen Remembrance Day parade.
He said he was very pleased to see four national governments represented at the Enniskillen ceremony in recent years; Stormont, United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland and the American governments.
The Enniskillen RBL have also taken part in the Republic’s annual remembrance ceremony at Islandbridge in July.
John, one of the first traffic wardens in Enniskillen, also worked at the Erne Hospital as a maintenance officer until retirement. He is a tour guide at St. Macartin’s Cathedral, Enniskillen where the family worship.
He and Jean have three of a family, Jonathan, Julie-Anne and Jeffrey and 11 grandchildren and were pre-deceased by a daughter, Jeanette.
