Fermanagh man Michael McGovern, who is being hailed for his man of the match performance which helped Northern Ireland make the last 16 of the European Championships, was already making the news in The Impartial Reporter newspaper as a month old baby, in summer 1984.

In a photo story published on August 16, 1984, Michael - whose middle name is Molaise - is pictured with his parents: ' Terry and Carmel McGovern with their son, Molaise, who was going to be baptised on Devenish Island.'

In the article, headlined 'Cardinal O'Fiaich on Historic Visit to Devenish,' it recorded that “one of the highlights of the afternoon was the baptism of Molaise McGovern, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Terry McGovern, who lives on the shores of the Lough near Devenish Island.”

At the outset, the article noted that the Cardinal was 'the special guest at an afternoon of history, music and song on Devenish Island in Lower Lough Erne, yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon. The Cardinal was joined by the Bishop of Clogher, Dr. Joseph Duffy, and several hundred people on the historic island.'

Meanwhile, excitement is escalating in Northern Ireland and beyond - as Northern Ireland, which may have lost to Germany 1-0 in Paris on Tuesday night - has gone into the knock out stages of Euro 2016.
