AFTER months of discussion, the referendum takes place today (Thursday) to decide whether Britain should leave or remain in the European Union.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm and will close at 10pm around Fermanagh.

This is the referendum question: “Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?” You then put a X in the box which reflects your choice. But remember: a ballot paper will only be counted if it contains a cross in either the box for Remain, or in the box for Leave.

To be eligible to vote all persons should be: listed on the electoral register, at least 18 years of age on 23 June 2016, British ex-pats who have lived overseas for less than 15 years and Irish citizens born in Northern Ireland and who have registered to vote there in the last 15 years. European citizens are not eligible to vote in the EU referendum.

The total number of votes and turnout for Fermanagh-south Tyrone will be announced in Omagh but the result will be fed through to the Titanic Exhibition Centre in Belfast.

When all the results are in, the declaration for Northern Ireland will then be announced.

The result is expected to be known in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
