Fermanagh 0-19

Wexford 1-11

Fermanagh produced a strong second half performance as they booked their place in the next round of the All Ireland Qualifiers with a 0-19 to 1-11 win over Wexford at Wexford Park this evening.

Wexford made life difficult for Fermanagh for the first 45 minutes or so but Pete McGrath's side took control after that and five points in a row from the 47th to 62nd minute put them five clear and they were able to push on for the win from there.

Fermanagh, who had the advantage of the wind in the first half, started the game well and by the eighth minute they had opened up a 0-04 to 0-01 lead. Sean Quigley converted two frees and landed a point from play during this period for Fermanagh while Tomás Corrigan also clipped over a free.

Quigley then had a chance to goal but his effort came off the crossbar before Corrigan gathered and banged over.

Wexford though were lively in attack themselves while midfielder Daithi Waters was dominating the exchanges in the middle third.

And with corner forward Donal Shanley punishing any indiscretions by the Fermanagh defence Wexford began to come back into things.

Shanley knocked over the home side's first four points from frees before John Tubritt then fired over a good effort from play as Wexford closed to within one, 0-06 to 0-05.

It got even better for Wexford moments later as Tubritt teed up half back Simon Donohoe who slotted a low shot to the corner to give the Model the lead for the first time.

Fermanagh though finished the half strongly and they accounted for four of the last five scores of the opening period to go in one ahead at the interval.

Quigley, Barry Mulrone, Tomás Corrigan and Eoin Donnelly all kicked points from play as McGrath's charges went in leading 0-10 to 1-06 at the break.

Fermanagh had a strong penalty claim in the first minute of the second half when Ryan Jones appeared to be pulled down but referee Eddie Kinsella waved play on.

It looked as if it might turn out to be one of those days when Wexford then landed the first two points of the second half through Tubritt and Brosnan to move one ahead.

However, Fermanagh never panicked and they went on to resume control of the contest over the next period.

Aidan Breen, Ruairi Corrigan and Tomás Corrigan were all to the fore as Fermanagh forged ahead.

Ryan Jones watched as his drive rattled the crossbar but Corrigan slotted over a free to level up proceedings before the same player then jinked his way in to fist over the bar to make it 0-12 to 1-08.

A Kevin O'Grady point had the sides tied once more but Tomás Corrigan tagged on two more points before a wonderful point with the outside of the boot from Ruairi Corrigan but three in it.

Fermanagh continued to dictate things and another Corrigan free was followed by a point from Ryan Jones, who was an influential figure in the second half, to put five between the sides.

Wexford did hit points from Tubritt and Shane Roche to give them hope as they reduced the deficit to three with four minutes to go.

However, Fermanagh made sure of the win as Corrigan accounted for his ninth point of the day and the excellent Breen grabbed his second to see McGrath's outfit finish up deserved five point victors.
