A memorable, informative and emotional Somme commemoration event and service was held in Colaghty Parish Church Hall at the time of the one hundredth anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.
An intergenerational mix from all backgrounds and faiths travelled from Bready, Cookstown, Fivemiletown, Enniskillen, Lack, Ederney, Kesh, Killadeas, Irvinestown, Fintona and Dromore, to be present on the night.
A specially commissioned floral display marking the 100th anniversary adorned the entrance hall, which led to an impressive display of memorabilia and pop up banners connected with the period leading up to and inclusive of the Great War. Particular emphasis was on the thirty-sixth Ulster Division and the 48 soldiers from around north Fermanagh who are known to have paid the ultimate sacrifice in war.
An interactive narrative called ‘Over The Top’ portrayed the conversations between soldiers in the trenches and brought home the reality of war.
This was followed by a service and an Act of Remembrance conducted by the Rev Alan Irwin. The event received grant assistance from Fermanagh and Omagh District Council and attendees received a gift of a mug displaying the parish church and the Ulster Tower as a reminder of the evening’s commemoration.
