MORE needs to be done to reduce the risk to road users in Ballinamallard, according to Erne North councillor, Raymond Farrell.

Lobbying TransportNI for more footpath provision along the main Ballinamallard to Enniskillen road, Mr. Farrell says he has been contacted on numerous occasions about alleged speeding in the area.

“I take the safety and well-being of every single road user very seriously and everything possible needs to be done to minimise risk to pedestrians and road users alike,” he insists.

“The Enniskillen Road out of Ballinamallard is a stretch of road that I have had numerous complaints about regarding alleged speeding. “I have brought this to the attention of TransportNI and the PSNI and while I appreciate the PSNI cannot be on the road every minute of every day, I believe more could be done to reduce and minimise risk to people and particularly pedestrians.”

The Fermanagh and Omagh district councillor says he has made repeated calls in the past for footpath provision on the Enniskillen Road and the Makenny Road, close to the primary school.

“The Enniskillen Road leads to numerous houses and developments and facilitates the Coa and Mullaghmeen areas as well,” argues Mr. Farrell, “A significant number of young people attend the local football club for training and matches as well as walkers and joggers. The road also hosts a number of senior citizens and I know they do be concerned at the speed of traffic at times.

"Roads Minister Chris Hazzard has designated this as Road Safety week for Northern Ireland. I think one way he could make our road ways safer is to increase finance to local TransportNI to invest in greater footpath provision in this village.”

The Department for Infrastructure was unable to make a comment on the issue at time of going to press.
