It appears Christmas tree festivals are the popular attraction this year.
Galloon Parish Church in Newtownbutler staged their festival recently and because of the success, it was re-opened for visitors again on Wednesday, December 21 between 6pm -10pm.
The rector, the Rev. Anita Kerr, said she was overwhelmed with the success and to see the creativity of people decorating the trees.
“All we did was to ask people to take a Bible verse and provide a tree. We thought we might get 20 but we had 40 trees. We had trees from the badminton club, Beavers, Brownies and other organisations and businesses. We have a memorial window in our church and the SEFF tree was great there.
Continuing, an enthused Rev. Kerr added: “There was a tree made from chains and a fir tree to look like a wedding dress. One of our parishioners, Catherine Little is a director of the Bible Society and they made a tree from bibles. Cavanagh Free Range Eggs made a tree from green egg boxes.”
She said it was the originality that struck her and the fact that so many people were not able to attend on Saturday and because of the effort that went in, they have decided to open the church on Wednesday evening next to allow more people see the trees.
The Rev. Kerr explained the main reason for staging the Christmas tree festival.
“We are trying to replace our church organ and we have three school age organists. This is the future of our parish,” she said.
Indeed, with the special trees remaining for Christmas, there will certainly be plenty of interest at Galloon Parish Church’s Christmas Eve service this year.
