Ballinamallard United has decided to switch the stands in which supporters watch games at Ferney Park after a young girl was hit in the face with a glass bottle.

Club officials met last Wednesday to discuss what measures could be taken after the girl was injured when a Portadown FC fan threw a bottle as supporters left the grounds on December 30.

The club decided that home supporters will now occupy the Village Stand and visiting supporters will be placed in the Fisher Stand. This will remove the need for visitors to pass home supporters as they leave Ferney Park.

A statement by Ballinamallard United said: “Following consultation last night between our club committee officers, the PSNI, our stewarding team, and supporters representatives, it has been decided that home fans will now occupy the Village Stand, and away fans will occupy the Fisher Stand at Ferney Park. This takes effect immediately and will be in operation for our home match against Glenavon on Tuesday January 17 and will continue thereafter.”

Ballinamallard Chairman Jeff Aiken told The Impartial Reporter that the injury to the girl, who is a Ballinamallard mascot, “will kick us into taking action.” He added: “We recognise the seriousness of the issue. Ballinamallard will have to take steps to ensure this does not happen again.”
