FERMANAGH footballer Michael McGovern was among those honoured in a glittering ceremony at Belfast Telegraph Sports Awards, which celebrated the very best of local sport.

The awards were held in the Waterfront Hall, attended by over 500 guests including sporting legends Pat Jennings, Paddy Hopkirk, Dame Mary Peters, Mike Gibson, Mickey Harte, Peter Canavan, Stephen Ferris and many others.

Michael won the George Best Breakthrough award, sponsored by GYM Co for his sensational performance against Germany in Paris that earned worldwide praise as he produced a series of astonishing saves. It was picked up by his father Terry.

In what was an amazing year for him, he helped to steer his country to the last 16 of the Euro 2016 finals. The Enniskillen man played in all four games for Northern Ireland as Michael O’Neill’s side reached the knockout stages in France. 

Judges said it was a fitting award for a man who enjoyed an unforgettable summer, producing one of the greatest ever individual performances for a Northern Ireland player.

Portora School Boat Club were a finalist in the awards in the Young Team of the Year category.
