Every time Father Brian D’Arcy appears on RTE’s “Late, Late Show” I make a point of watching it. And every time, he doesn’t disappoint with new words of wisdom.
Again, last Friday night, he was inspirational. There were lots of interesting things to listen to about the church and forgiveness. But he certainly touched a chord when speaking about his priesthood.
He said he felt he’d have been a better priest if he’d married, and showed some emotion as he regretted not having grandchildren to go home to.
Twitter and Facebook went crazy with comments about the wonderful example he’d been to many viewers, indeed many of them who’d either given up the faith or became disillusioned with the institution of the church. They viewed him as a real joyous and genuine Christian.
Father Brian has served Fermanagh unbelievably well, and the Graan as well as the wider community is going to miss him when he moves on later this year.
Somehow, though, I think we’ll hear plenty more from this brilliant man. I feel privileged to know him.
