WHEN former Ulster Unionist MLA Rosemary Barton was elected last year she said she would focus on bringing jobs to Fermanagh and fixing our health service.
Asked this week how her pledge had gone, Mrs. Barton (pictured above centre with party supporters) told Election Files that she had spent her time in the Assembly “lobbying” for the area and was “not powerless.”
Meanwhile, the Fermanagh-south Tyrone candidate has said she opposes abortion even in the circumstances where the woman has been the victim of a sexual assault.
“I am totally against abortion, I believe when a child is conceived it has the right to be allowed to live.”
She said there were “no circumstances” in which she would support abortion.
Asked specifically if she agreed with abortion if the woman has been sexually assaulted, Mrs. Barton said: “Again, I am against abortion.” She is also against same sex marriage.
Mrs. Barton has said she will vote for the SDLP’s Richie McPhillips after she has voted for other unionists in next week’s election.
“Mr. McPhillips will be getting a choice further down.” She wants to continue working with Mr. McPhillips on improving health and infrastructure here if they are returned to Stormont.
“I do hope he gets elected, we are both our own people, neither of us are in politics for personal gain.
“Richie’s a cheeky chappy. You know Richie and I grew up in the one townland? I’ve known him for a long time. However, he is two years younger than me. I’ll keep him in line,” laughed Mrs. Barton
