A former Orangeman turned humanist who is running for the Northern Ireland Conservatives hopes Fermanagh GAA can one day lift the Sam Maguire cup and will be there to “cheer them on.”
Richard Dunn (right) also believes the Irish language “enriches your culture” and wants to learn more.
“Children and young adults should be given some exposure to the Irish language.”
The would-be MLA does not think the Irish Language Act would be value for money but would like to see more people introduced to it.
“I know a few words and phrases. If I found the time I would very much like to learn more about the language; where it comes from, having a knowledge of that definitely enriches your culture.”
Mr. Dunn says he is no longer a member of the Orange Order and identifies himself as a humanist.
Asked if he would attend a GAA match, the Brookeborough man said: “I would have absolutely no problem attending a GAA match... to shut yourself off from that is irresponsible.
“I remember in 2004 when Fermanagh got to the semi-finals of the all-Ireland, I was absolutely glued to that and was rooting for Fermanagh.
“I did genuinely want Fermanagh to do well. If Fermanagh can go on and lift the Sam Maguire I’ll be there cheering them on,” he told Election Files.
