The pupils of St. Tierney’s Primary School in Rosslea have been encouraging their local community to take more of their daily journeys by bicycle.
Taking part in the Big Pedal initiative, staff, children and parents pedalled bikes and scooters to school every morning for two weeks.
The Big Pedal competition which is powered by the charity Sustrans encourages parents to leave the car behind and take to two wheels.
At St. Tierney’s the initiative was extended to community members, including many businessmen and women, plus the local parish priest.
Principal Greg Slowey said: “We’ve encouraged the whole school to take part and have had a fantastic response. The children arrive into school energised and ready to start the day. Parents have really made a tremendous effort in accompanying their children on bikes and scooters.”
Ann-Marie Cox, Active Travel Officer for Sustrans commended St. Tierney’s on their efforts: “The children, parent’s staff and governors here have set a great example for other schools in the district. “It’s amazing to see the local community in Rosslea show their support for the school by cycling with them in the mornings. We’re hoping to continue this travel behaviour right to the end of the school year.”
