BBC Radio 4 are celebrating 70 years of broadcasting and recently came to Fermanagh, the most westerly point of the United Kingdom, to broadcast Gardeners’ Question Time.

Fermanagh Gardening Society had the privilege of hosting this prestigious event in the College of Agriculture Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) - Enniskillen Campus on Tuesday, June 6.

One hundred and eighty enthusiastic gardeners were in attendance from Co. Fermanagh, Co. Leitrim, Co. Donegal, as well as Banbridge and Cookstown.

A celebrity panel with Bob Flowerdew, Anne Swithinbank and Neil Porteous, chaired by Eric Robson, gave gardeners advice and tips on a range of garden questions including how to grow healthy tomatoes, protect hedges, and the after care of daffodils.

Two different programmes were recorded on the night in Enniskillen. Radio 4 will broadcast the first recording on Friday, June 23, at 3pm, and it will be repeated on Sunday, June 25 at 2pm. The second recording will be broadcast on Friday, August 4 at 3pm and will be repeated on Sunday, August 6 at 2pm.

Fermanagh Gardening Society, a long established organisation in the county, meets in the library at 8pm on the third Tuesday of the month from September; new members are welcome. A variety of speakers address the meetings.

Gardeners’ Question Time previously visited Enniskillen over 20 years ago.
