FAMILIES of the victims of the 1987 Enniskillen bomb want to have a plaque containing the names of those people killed in the IRA atrocity removed from the town’s Cenotaph, a letter received by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council (FODC) has claimed.

In a report presented to this month’s meeting of the local authority’s Regeneration and Community Committee, it was revealed that Council had received correspondence from victims’ group, South East Fermanagh Foundation (SEFF), regarding the Cenotaph in Enniskillen.

In the letter, sent by the group’s Advocacy Manager, it was claimed that families of the bereaved and injured of the 1987 bomb were “unhappy” that the plaque containing the names of the dead was added to the Cenotaph several years ago.

They have similar feelings over the 11 bronze doves that were also added to the monument along with the plaque, according to the correspondence.

The letter from SEFF asked if the Council was the custodian of the Cenotaph and – if it was – how the wishes of the families (to have the doves and plaque removed) could be progressed.

But the report presented to the Committee meeting makes clear that the Council is not the owner of the Cenotaph in Enniskillen.

Under the ‘Key Issues’ section of the report, the author further states that the legacy Fermanagh District Council was not involved in the addition of the plaque and the doves to the Cenotaph.

Meanwhile, the report concludes with the recommendation that SEFF is advised that the Council is not the custodian of the War Memorial, Enniskillen in regard to the organisation’s request.

Earlier this year, The Impartial Reporter revealed that a fundraising campaign was underway to build a permanent memorial to those killed and injured in the Enniskillen bombing at the site of the IRA attack, to mark 30 years since the atrocity which left 11 dead and 63 injured.

A 12th victim, school principal Ronnie Hill, died in 2000 having spent 13 years in a coma.

The design of the proposed memorial was posted on social media and shows what it would look like positioned at the side of the Clinton Centre on Belmore Street.
